With over a third of households renting in England and Wales, we thought it would be best if we give our two most important suggestions when it you move into a new rental property.
- Check to see if you have contents cover as soon as you move in. You don’t need to worry about buildings insurance as your landlord is responsible for this, but contents insurance is very important. Prices can also differ depending on whether you’re living with family or if you’re house sharing.
- Before you give over your deposit, double check to see if it’s protected. If you’re in an assured shorthold tenancy, then your landlord has to put your deposit into a scheme within 30 days or a court can order them to pay you a penalty of up to three times the deposit (in extreme cases).
